Tyson Foods Recalls Chicken Due to Undisclosed Allergens

Tyson Foods Inc. has voluntarily recalled 51,360 pounds of uncooked chicken in 29 states, including Arizona, due to a soy-based allergen. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the product, and the company says the recall is a precautionary measure.

Tyson has reportedly been reducing the number of allergens in its food service products and produced some products with its old formulation while prematurely using a new label, the company said Thursday. The products were produced at the company's Vicksburg, Miss., location between July 23 Aug. 5.

About seven million Americans are estimated to have food allergies, and they rely on product labels to avoid ingredients that could trigger an anaphylactic reaction. Roughly half the 30000 annual emergency room admissions for food allergies are due to peanuts, and about 200 people a year die of anaphylaxis from food allergies. Even trace amounts of allergens can provoke fatal reactions in susceptible individuals.

The allergy to soy can be mild to life-threatening anaphylaxis. For those with soy allergies, it is necessary to avoid anything that has ‘soy’ listed in the ingredients.
